Battery-operated, handheld flashlights were invented back in 1899 by David Misell. These hand torches didn&#8217;t stay lit for long before they needed &#8216;to rest.&#8217; That&#8217;s why they&#8217;re called &#8216;FLASH&#8217; lights.
